Deeply avant-garde, the late recognition of Saul Leiter is now exploding. Almost sixty years later, his delicacy, between abstraction and figuration, places him among the greatest. Saul Leiter made most of these images between 19, walking the streets of Downtown Manhattan in New York, capturing the magic and mystery of ordinary settings. The choice fell on works related to street photography, underlining its extreme singularity, contrary to the codes of documentary reporting. This book brings together 76 unpublished images, selected from the photographer’s archives.

Very much ahead of his time, Saul Leiter invested in coloured slides starting in 1948 as an artistic medium in its own right, through projections that he organized. His studio in the East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in 2013, is now the home of the Saul Leiter Foundation, which has commenced a full-scale survey of his more than 80,000 works. Les Perles du Beau Livre, which rewards the most beautiful books of the year, distinguished this year The Unseen Saul Leiter published by Textuel editions. His studio in the East Village, where he lived from 1952 until his death in 2013, is now the home of the Saul Leiter Foundation, which has commenced a full-scale survey of his more than 80,000 works.
